They also adapt study conditions in the event of temporary or long-term disability, request the continuation of grants on medical grounds, prescribe medication, etc.

Health checks are carried out by a general practitioner or nurse and cover a range of topics: education, diet, sleep, stress, physical activity, drug use, hearing, sight, vaccinations, as well as the student’s physical, emotional and mental health. It is a confidential discussion based on national health recommendations. Students can ask any questions they might have and raise any health topics that they find relevant.

The doctor or nurse listens, gives non-judgemental advice and, if necessary, refers the patient to other healthcare professionals.

To schedule a health check, students may receive a letter of invitation or they can contact the SSU

An appointment takes 45 minutes if a sight and hearing test is performed

UA’s social services are available for students looking for help with food, finance, practical matters (housing, transport, etc.), IT issues, personal, family and social matters. The service can activate different aid schemes depending on the student’s situation and it provides information on access to financial aid (grants, CAF, social security, etc.).

UA’s psychiatrists are available for students who suffer from anxiety, emotional dependency, depressive tendencies, adjustment disorders, or a malaise of sufficient magnitude to disrupt their quality of life and self-esteem or lead to dark thoughts or addiction.

Students suffering from an identified disorder (mood disorder, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, psychotic disorder, eating disorder), who wish to continue their specialized follow-up through psychotherapy and prescription medication can also make an appointment with the university psychiatrists.

Psychiatric appointments can only be made through referral by an SSU health professional

UA’s psychologists are available for students who are feeling unwell and feel the need to talk with a professional.

An initial consultation must be made with a doctor or nurse, who will assess the student’s situation and refer to the proper professional and/or structure according to the student’s situation (SUIOP, SUAPS, ALIA, victim support associations, etc.).

If deemed necessary, students may then be contacted by the SSU to set up an appointment with one of the university psychologists. Follow-up appointments with a doctor or nurse are possible while students await the psychologist appointment.

UA’s dieticians offer personalised advice on a balanced diet if students are overweight, vegetarian or if they practice specific sports. They can also provide simple cooking tips for a healthy lifestyle, as well as ideas for easy recipes, or personalised dietary monitoring. Consultations are strictly confidential.

A doctor at the University Sexual Health Centre receives students for sexual health matters: worries after intercourse, contraception, STD testing, gynaecological issues, late period, abuse, etc.

Open to all students regardless of their university.

The SSU offers the following services:

• fitting of implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs)
• screening for chlamydial and gonococcal infections (please note: screening for chlamydial infections can be done on-site by taking a urine sample, but not for the AIDS virus)
• urine pregnancy test

The Disability Support Service provides information and support to students with disabilities or long-term medical conditions throughout their studies at UA.
